Aldi to build its northeast regional headquarters and distribution center |
|
|
Aldi, a large grocery store chain, has selected a 106 acre industrially-zoned parcel on Rye Street (opposite Nutmeg Recyclers) to build its northeast regional headquarters and distribution center. At just under 500,000 square feet of floor area, this is the largest industrial economic development project ever proposed in South Windsor. It is larger than DST Output, Macy’s or UTC. None of the facility’s truck traffic will turn left out of the site to go north on Rye Street into residential areas. All loading dock areas have been designed to face away from residential areas.
The site is surrounded by mature woods, which will remain. The building
will be of the highest quality. At the first Planning & Zoning
Commission hearing, the only supporters were the Town’s Economic
Development Coordinator, Craig Stevenson, and one resident. No one from
the business community supported the application. A number of residents
from the neighborhood near Rye Street Park opposed the application. The
next Planning & Zoning Commission hearing is on Tuesday March 20 at
7:30 p.m., at which time everyone is welcome to speak, pro or con.
Letters may also be sent to: Mr. Patrick Kennedy, Chairman, Planning
& Zoning Commission, Town Hall, 1540 Sullivan Avenue, South
Windsor, CT 06074.
