2019 Business Person of the Year!
Jay Murtha, Jay’s Landscaping
His lawn care business grew and he added landscaping to the services offered. As a tribal member he was offered the opportunity to competitively bid on an enormous landscaping project – Mohegan Sun Casino. Jay’s competitive pricing and professional approach to the project earned him the contract in 1999. Upon the very successful completion of the project Jay proceeded to register with the State of CT Department of Administrative Services as a minority contractor. This opened doors, but the reason that the business continued to grow was due to the great reputation of Jay’s Landscaping. Landscaping is typically the last part of a project to be completed. The timeline is tight; everyone wants to get their property up and running. Jay’s Landscaping became known as the one that gets it done – timely and professionally.
Fast forward to today –
Jay’s now has 5 mow crews – working on residential, local commercial and high visibility sites such as The Promenade at Evergreen Walk, The Mill Group, Duncaster retirement community, Riverfront Recapture and many more. Additionally, there are landscaping crews working on everything from shrub trimming, mulch installation and the installation of trees, plants, hydroseeding and shrubs. In total there are currently 30 employees at Jay’s.
Jay is a lifelong resident of South Windsor. At age 14 his dedication to the Town began by becoming a volunteer member of the Fire Explorers through the South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department and the South Windsor rescue squad. His dedication to the Town has continued through the years as a volunteer fire fighter (he now has forty years of service), the South Windsor VFD’s Rescue Squad (36 years of service), a member of the South Windsor Chamber of Commerce and through generous donations to many organizations in Town and throughout the Greater Hartford area. In 2004 he received the Public Service Award from the Secretary of the State, in 2005 he received the Achievement in Business Award from the South Windsor Chamber, he received a Town of South Windsor Certificate of Appreciation for his selfless display of patriotism when Bill Aman was Mayor, and this spring he was recognized as the Town of South Windsor Honoree for the 2019 Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Jay is the proud father of two adult daughters; he is engaged to Beth Grigorian and enjoys spending time with friends and family during his free time.
